The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called on policymakers to modernise monetary policy frameworks to better withstand growing uncertainty in the global economy.
Dr Asiama made the call at the High-Level Forum on the Modernisation of Monetary Policy Formulation and Implementation, held in Accra on Monday, August 17, 2026.
Speaking at the two-day forum, the Governor highlighted recent reforms undertaken by the Bank of Ghana to strengthen the formulation, implementation, communication and forecasting of monetary policy.
He said policymakers must look beyond responding to immediate economic shocks and focus on building systems capable of adapting to changing conditions.
“The challenge is not simply to respond to the shock of the day. It is to build monetary policy frameworks that are robust enough to withstand uncertainty, flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances, and credible enough to anchor expectations.”
Dr Asiama also stressed the importance of clear communication and ensuring that monetary policy decisions effectively reach the broader economy.
He said policymakers must work to reduce the gap between the policy they intend to implement, how financial markets interpret it and how it ultimately affects economic activity.
“It is about reducing the distance between the policy we intend, the policy the market understands, and the policy the economy ultimately experiences.”
The forum brought together central bankers and policymakers to exchange experiences, share practical approaches and strengthen collaboration on the development of more effective monetary policy frameworks.
